Junior Infants

(Ms. Dolan, Ms. Flanagan, Ms. Dooley & Ms. Mc Weeney)

In St. Joseph's, Junior Infant classes are very active with daily phonics lessons in the morning, taught through songs, actions, poems, rhymes and stories. The children are active participants in a variety of hands on lessons which aim to include children of all abilities and all backgrounds. We are very fortunate to have 3 additional teachers in the classroom each day for parallel teaching lessons.

Because of these additional teachers we have lots of opportunities to partake in more hands on activities such as field trips to shops, the cathedral, or topics links to the Aistear theme, but also baking, gardening and other investigatory activities.

Aistear (structured play) is practiced every day based on a theme each month which gives the children an opportunity to practice language skills as well as learning how to make friends and most importantly have fun!

We have really large, new classrooms which give ample space for movement and play in the classroom. Each classroom has interactive boards which are integrated into every lesson throughout the day.

The children avail of 4 weeks swimming in The Mall and we have other amazing physical education opportunities with an outside GAA coach, a block term of balance bikes and teachers with great personal interest in promoting physical health and wellbeing.
